weaving with Amparo

Overview:

This project was created to support an incredibly strong and talented single mother who lives in a rural community in El Salvador. Amparo del Carmen Valle Velez was taught by her grandfather to make fishing nets but now uses those skills to weave beautiful hammocks. She passed her love of weaving down to her daughter, Ingrid, who helps make hammocks and hand-weaves each bracelet! We’re on our way to connecting Amparo and Ingrid to customers around the world so they can provide for their families and community!

Amparo, her daughter Maria José, and myself reconnecting for the first time post pandemic!

Goals:

  1. Solidify local support team to assist and eventually own logistics

  2. Set up reliable & consistent sales channels

  3. Establish Build A Nest compliance standards in Amparo’s home workshop (See Standards Here)

  4. Scale the business and provide opportunities for education and upward mobility

“One Thread”

I am one minuscule thread interconnecting with small threads on each side of me.

As our connections build, we can together become a larger community, weaving in and out of each other, becoming one entity, one structure, which can define and defy the expectations of many.

No matter my size and color, my shape or texture, I am a necessary thread in this fabric.
